Since the last newsletter, the Editing Team has created new interfaces for the link and citation tools and fixed many bugs and changed some elements of the design. Some of these bugs affected users of VisualEditor on mobile devices. Status reports are posted on mediawiki.org. The worklist for April through June is available in Phabricator.
A test of VisualEditor's effect on new editors at the English Wikipedia has just completed the first phase. During this test, half of newly registered editors had VisualEditor automatically enabled, and half did not. The main goal of the study is to learn which group was more likely to save an edit and to make productive, unreverted edits. Initial results will be posted at Meta later this month.

[רעדאַקטירן קוואַלטעקסט]Auto-fill features for citations are available at a few Wikipedias through the citoid service. Citoid takes a URL or DOI for a reliable source, and returns a pre-filled, pre-formatted bibliographic citation. If Citoid is enabled on your wiki, then the design of the citation workflow changed during May. All citations are now created inside a single tool. Inside that tool, choose the tab you want (⧼citoid-citeFromIDDialog-mode-auto⧽, ⧼citoid-citeFromIDDialog-mode-manual⧽, or ⧼citoid-citeFromIDDialog-mode-reuse⧽). The cite button is now labeled with the word "⧼visualeditor-toolbar-cite-label⧽" rather than a book icon, and the autofill citation dialog now has a more meaningful label, "⧼Citoid-citeFromIDDialog-lookup-button⧽", for the submit button.
The link tool has been redesigned based on feedback from Wikipedia editors and user testing. It now has two separate sections: one for links to articles and one for external links. When you select a link, its pop-up context menu shows the name of the linked page, a thumbnail image from the linked page, Wikidata's description, and appropriate icons for disambiguation pages, redirect pages and empty pages (where applicable). Search results have been reduced to the first five pages. Several bugs were fixed, including a dark highlight that appeared over the first match in the link inspector. (T98085)
The special character inserter in VisualEditor now uses the same special character list as the wikitext editor. Admins at each wiki can also create a custom section for frequently used characters at the top of the list. Please read the instructions for customizing the list at mediawiki.org. Also, there is now a tooltip to describing each character in the special character inserter. (T70425)
Several improvements have been made to templates. When you search for a template to insert, the list of results now contains descriptions of the templates. The parameter list inside the template dialog now remains open after inserting a parameter from the list, so that users don’t need to click on "⧼visualeditor-dialog-transclusion-add-param⧽" each time they want to add another parameter. (T95696) The team added a new property for TemplateData, "ביישפיל", for template parameters. This optional, translatable property will show up when there is text describing how to use that parameter. The design of the main toolbar and several other elements have changed slightly, to be consistent with the MediaWiki theme. In the Vector skin, individual items in the menu are separated visually by pale gray bars. Buttons and menus on the toolbar can now contain both an icon and a text label, rather than just one or the other. This new design feature is being used for the cite button on wikis where the Citoid service is enabled.
The team has released a long-desired improvement to the handling of non-existent images. If a non-existent image is linked in an article, then it is now visible in VisualEditor and can be selected, edited, replaced, or removed.

[רעדאַקטירן קוואַלטעקסט]Hi, פוילישער. I'm afraid I can't write or speak much Yiddish, though I can read some. But as you see, I've made a couple of contributions, anyway. Here's a question for you.
On the page היינט, the description points out that on the Western calendar, days run from midnight-to-midnight, while on the Jewish calendar, days run from צאת. All fine. (OK. We could argue צאת or שקיעה. But never mind that.) But in the template I created for this wiki, I didn't do anything about that.
If you look at the Hebrew versions of the template, you'll see that I did, in fact, do something about that. But there are a couple of reasons it was easier to do there:
1. The server has a specific home time zone (IST/IDT)
2. There is some infrastructure in the form of templates giving approximate times for שקיעה in Israel, and templates that in turn return the current actual Hebrew calendar date, based on that שקיעה time.
3. At that, I did a little fancy footwork around היום and אור ליום to help explain away why the day of the week and the Hebrew date might not match up—and handled two similar but not identical templates, used for different purposes, differently.
There is a way to kind-of, sort-of do this: you can set the parser to call the Hebrew date of "six hours from now." This way, the Hebrew date advances at 18:00 local server time, instead of 00:00. Obviously, this is only a surrogate, without the actual infrastructure of being able to call a local sundown time, but it is possible. But I didn't do so, because this server runs neutrally on UTC; otherwise, what time zone would I use? At minimum, there are decent-sized pockets of Yiddish speakers in Israel, in more than one place in North America, in more than one place in Europe, and in Australia. And there may be more.
On English Wikipedia, there's even a way to manage the time-zone issue. If you look at this template, en:User:StevenJ81/userbsd2, you can see how. But that depends on a ton of time zone template infrastructure that doesn't exist here, either.

Very nice. I fully appreciate the dilemma.
It is not a new problem for me; I have my settings show the Hebrew date so I suffer this problem every evening.

{{#time:format}}, you can call the time using the format {{#time:format|offset}}. So for me, if I called {{#time:j F Y — xjj xjF xJY|-4 hours}} (because I live in EDT), it would return this:I rigged up, for your convenience, a little extra code in מוסטער:היינט, although I intend it to stay undocumented for now. But if you call
{{היינט|offset=number of hours offset from UTC}}, you'll get the template displaying correctly for your local time (both calendars). And if you also add the parameter |erev=erev the Hebrew date will advance at 18:00 based on your offset. Example below is |offset=-4|erev=erev.Hope that was helpful.

For the life of me I can't find where to select the Hebrew date in my User Preferences. I'm not sure if I want to or not, but can you point me there?
The date-changeover issue has two parts. (1) Is this wiki going to have a "home" time zone and location? (2) Then: do we want to execute a different changeover approach, and if so, how?
For (1), some languages have obvious home time zones and some don't. Hebrew? Jerusalem. Russian? Moscow. French? Paris. But some languages don't: English, Simple English, and Spanish all use generic UTC as their home time zone. (How do you pick between Sydney, London, New York, and Vancouver?) For Yiddish, there are only two choices: Israel, or plain, generic UTC. (Again, Israel is one thing, but how do you choose between New York, London and Antwerp?) If you want to pick Israel, then you probably have to go through a process of getting consensus for that at קאווע שטיבל. Once you do that, though, for (2) you can import {{שקיעה}} from hewiki, and go on to have the date advance per sundown in Jerusalem. That's what hewiki does.
If this wiki stays on UTC, though, (2) becomes a big question. There is no sundown "location" to use. We could arbitrarily agree to advance the Hebrew date at 18:00 UTC, as a symbolic measure (and because molad Tishri calculations use that convention). I could do that for you easily enough. But what's the point? If this wiki stays on UTC, I'd treat date functions as if this were a printed calendar. Printed Hebrew calendars only tell you today's Hebrew date. They assume you know that the date changes at sundown, wherever you actually are, but they don't print it.
Maybe that leads to the same conclusion as "unresolved". But it's not "unresolved" to me, it's actually a proper resolution.
Here's a quick question for you, and one that I imagine you can decide unilaterally. Would you rather that the default date in Yiddish appear as "ז' תמוז" (as it does now) or "ז' בתמוז", the way it does on Hebrew Wikipedia? I can easily do that for you by changing the genitive month forms at translatewiki. Just let me know.
