פֿון װיקיפּעדיע
This is a policy of the Yiddish Wikipedia. Comments are welcome on the talk page.
Users are encouraged to translate this page into Yiddish.

Wikipedia's goal, in any language, is to be a free content encyclopedia. That means that wherever possible, whatever is contained here should be freely available for anyone to use at any time. Content becomes freely available in one of two ways:

  • it is in the public domain outright, or
  • it is published under a license that allows it to be used freely, with substantially no restrictions (except, perhaps, for attribution).

The vast majority of information in the Wikimedia projects is free content. But Wikipedia is also an encyclopedia, and there are times when copyrighted material helps a user identify and understand the topic better. For example, consider Vietnam Airlines and VietJet Air, two Vietnam-based airlines with similar names. Being able to see the airline logo in the article will help a user identify which airline he or she is looking for. However frequently such logos are copyrighted by their owners.

Under certain circumstances, such copyrighted media ("non-free content") can be used, without the owners' explicit consent, for educational and related purposes. In the United States, this is called the fair use doctrine; it exists similarly in other countries. In order for Wikipedia to use such materials, though, it must (a) acknowledge the copyright, and (b) state why the particular use is allowable notwithstanding the copyright.

To enforce these limitations, the Wikimedia Foundation requires all of its projects that contain non-free content to publish and adhere to what it calls an Exemption Doctrine Policy. This simply means that it publishes a policy and enforces rules about use of non-free content on the project.

On the Yiddish Wikipedia, commonly referred to as וויקיפעדיע, the Exemption Doctrine Policy we use is that of the English Wikipedia, which can be found at the link just below. A small number of minor modifications for use on this wiki are outlined below the link. While we will try to translate the core documents and templates into Yiddish, the English Wikipedia version of the policy will be considered definitive, simply because the manpower exists to maintain it more readily. You will find details at the link below, but please note that this policy is more restrictive that simply requiring that the "non-free content" be allowable under the fair use doctrine.

The entire content of that page is incorporated into this policy.

Modifications specific to Yiddish Wikipedia

[רעדאַקטירן קוואַלטעקסט]

There are certain things that will work slightly differently here than on English Wikipedia, either from a logistics perspective or from a policy perspective.

  1. There will be no free media content stored locally at Judeo-Spanish Wikipedia. Free media files must be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons. You can do that yourself by clicking the link "אַרױפֿלאָדן בילדער/טעקעס" in the navigation bar.
Files on Wikimedia Commons can be included in any article you edit here by simply adding [[טעקע:filename (etc.)]] just as if it were a file stored locally.
  2. Only administrators can upload non-free media files to be stored locally at Yiddish Wikipedia. If you want to have a picture or other non-free media file uploaded, you will have to send it to an administrator by email, with your rationale for why you believe the file meets the non-free content policy. (Alternatively, identify the URL of the file to the administrator on-wiki.) If the administrator agrees, the administrator will upload the file locally. If the administrator disagrees, you are free to appeal to a different administrator, but your chances of success in that are small.
  3. Israeli copyright law. While the English Wikipedia policy is definitive, media items that are not considered copyrighted under United States copyright law—but are considered copyrighted under Israeli law—will be considered "non-free content" for the purpose of this wiki. You can often tell cases like this because such media files are stored locally on English Wikipedia with a "no-copyright" notice, stored on Hebrew Wikipedia with a copyright notice, and are not stored on Commons.

The following templates are available to outline the justification for use of non-free media here:

Documentation for those templates are available (in Yiddish) at the template page. Because only administrators can upload media files at this wiki, administrators are responsible for correctly adding and filling in templates on all media pages.
